FIC MASTER POST: Adventures in Solitude

Written for comicsbigbang and finally, finally ready to be unveiled. After eight months! After two terms of school! Three vacations! Countless cups of tea! After two extremely badly-timed internet outages! IT. IS. FINISHED.

Title: Adventures in Solitude
Fandom: DC Comics, Titans-centric
Rating: Adult (aka there be sexing in here, boys and girls)
Warnings: Underage sex/drinking, NSFW macro images in Part Two
Pairings: Jaime/Tim(/Scarab), Cassie/Mia, Tim/Surveillance, Bart/Shenanigans, Titans/The Past, Linda/Linda/Linda, Paco/Brenda, Paco/Kon/Cows, Author/Sentiment.
Notes: A million thanks to Gloss, for being endlessly encouraging, Mona, for reading a draft that read like Swiss cheese and still giving encouraging, insightful, and enthusiastic feedback and encouragement, and Jube, who was my personal cheerleader, hand-holder, and provider of several of the more out-there plot twists. This one's for y'all.

Section titles are from the New Pornographers album “Challengers”.

3. Two Weeks – Grizzly Bear
4. Lust For Life - Girls

15. Bonus Track (IT IS A SEKRIT :D)

And, because I couldn't quite put it in the playlist proper but I had to share it: Tiny Dancer – Elton John.

The Bitchface Song is inspired by Person Person, by Mirah. I recorded Bart's version back in September, and never made a version that I liked better over the ensuing months.

YOU DID IT! CONGRATULATIONS!

I can't wait to read it all together, but for now: Bart/Shenanigans is the OTP to end all OTPs, I mean, *really*.

Ahhh okay, that was the only other thing I could think of but I wasn't sure if you were mixing that.

Your version of Bart is making me very happy.

"Actually, it's Slaughterhouse Four," Mia calls out as she passes.

"You lie," Kon shoots back, but he looks briefly troubled.

and

"Seriously, guys." Kon appears to be in the midst of a serious philosophical moment. "It's Slaughterhouse Five, right?"

"Oh, Kon." Tim looks across at Jaime and Jaime is not that knowledgeable about deciphering Bat-Emotions but that is probably a smile. Directed at him. "Everybody knows it's Slaughterhouse Seven."

This whole thing is so wonderful and alternately heartwarming and heartbreaking by turns, and when the second part is posted I will hopefully give a fuller review, but I just need to say that this running gag made me cough and splutter with glee. ♥

This is so heartbreakingly beautiful I think the only reason it hasn't turned me into a sobbing wreck is because it makes me too satisfied and happy to want to.

This ... completes something, that I didn't know could be fixed. It's wonderful.
eisen: Minori (like guardian angels). (like claiming a part of time.)

fdsfhsdl;khh PART TWO. So hilarious (I burst out laughing SO MANY TIMES I COULD NOT BEGIN TO QUOTE THEM ALL), but so heartbreaking in all the ways it knows it cannot last. It reminds me of a Los Campesinos! line, except not really: "We think there's future in the fucking, but there is no fucking future", screaming the line so loud it twists a face into a smile just because of the volume.

But so perfect because - this is good. It takes that line everyone quotes from DKR, that this would be a good life, good enough, but it's the exact opposite of what that's usually taken to mean, really. It's better than worse, it's better than the fear. It's happy. It's not perfect - it doesn't need to be.

I love that this doesn't exactly fix things, so much as reconcile them; it - it's not that kind of hopeful. There's a wryness and a sadness to it that keeps it from being cheerful and bright and totally free, but that's okay, because the characters are more beautiful for it. They are bent; they are broken; they are not defeated. Yes, that's it exactly.

It ... fills the holes. Yeah. Everything could go wrong, everything can go wrong, but it doesn't always have to. There's - this is the problem with canon, there's no room for this.

It's just - I missed reading stories that remembered the Titans - these kids, these young adults, these mature superheroes - were people, who were afraid, but were also dorks and goofballs and pretty and loving and friends (sometimes with benefits) and sometimes more. I missed having a world that gave everyone room to just breathe. I didn't know how much until I found it again in this story.

*refreshes the page a billion times in the hopes that part 2 magically appears and then re-reads part one over and over again* Gods, that was /awesome/!!!!! {hugs} /everyone/. Also, it's a good thing that I just read redrobin 12, or I'd be even more incoherent about how much more awesome this is than anything done to Tim in ages.

THIS FIC TOUCHED ME IN MY FEELINGS PLACE and made me like it :'| I loved pretty much everything about it in fact? And I am pretty sure I am going to be rereading it soon because the humour and character interaction and sheer half-bittersweet good-heartedness of it really affected me. And okay I am babbling, but basically everything [personal profile] eisen said? That is how I feel. This fic ... it feels like the kind of story that should be told in comics instead of the stories that are being told.

From an Internet Stranger, thank you for writing this.
