a strangely fandom-filled, strangely lengthy post

Oh my god, is DC going to fall into a black hole of endless Lantern events and variant covers now that Johns is in charge at the asylum?

(Countdown to the storyline adapted from Geoff Johns' fanfiction drawer [bc you know he has one] where Cassie, Kon and Tim have to have a threesome to save the universe: begins now.)

Meme du jour: Leave a comment on this post and I will pick three of your fandoms. Then you get to answer the following questions. Except that three sounds like a bit much, so I'll do one or two because these are a lot of questions. [personal profile] haunted prompted me for the following:

1. The character I first fell in love with
Jaime, of course. Though I really knew that I was going to really love the series when his mom managed to pwn Guy Gardner.
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now
Brother Paco of Our Church of Bros. He initially came across as everything that I hate, and then he grew on me like fungus made of bro and love.
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't
This is a hard fandom to do this meme for, partly because it's a tiny fandom and I don't know who "everyone" really consists of and partly because everyone in the title is so dear and I can't think of anyone that I hate at ALL, let alone someone who everyone else loves.
4. The character I love that everyone else hates
Not a character, but Matt Sturges doesn't get enough props. The immigration storyline certainly could have used less "I, a teenager living on the border with a last name of fucking REYES, have never ever thought about the complexities of illegal immigration derp derp", but it wasn't his idea, which means that it could have been so much worse. Like, Judd Winick America's Most Wanted worse. Guy had his big storylines cut short twice in a row now, and I feel for that. He remained really true to the world that had been constructed, didn't smear himself all over the comic in a marking of territory, and did some really excellent characterization work. Plus, Brenda and Paco didn't suddenly cease to become interesting once they became a couple, and that is really freaking rare.
5. The character I used to love but don't any longer
This has never happened.
6. The character I would shag anytime
Bianca Reyes. YEAH, I SAID IT.
7. The character I'd want to be like
Jaime's ability to remain resoundingly good in the face of the DCU's insanity gets me every time.
8. The character I'd slap
Must I? I will slap Paco's hand in bro communion.
9. A pairing that I love
Jaime/Scarab. Their love is so frandly.
10. A pairing that I despise
I can't think of any!
11. Favorite character
12. My five favorite characters
1. Jaime and all Reyeses
2. the Scarab
3. Brenda&Paco
5. Traci
13. My five least favorite characters
Not Applicable.
14. Which character I am most like
These days? Grumpy as Milagro.
15. My deep, dark fandom secret
I adore Jaime/Traci in canon (and I nearly NEVER say this about canon het couples) but I'd like to see more Jaime possibilities in fic. Which is a polite way of saying that people need to write about him and makeouts with dudes more often.

Bat People, Dear Reader:

1. The character I first fell in love with
Tim. J introduced him to me by recapping A Lonely Place of Dying and I was sold.
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now
Jason motherfucking Todd.
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't
Damian holy crap my hatred will never cease to be.
4. The character I love that everyone else hates
Hmm. The thing about Bat-fandom is that everyone has their fans.
5. The character I used to love but don't any longer
I used to at least tolerate Bruce, but now I can't stand him in canon OR in fic.
6. The character I would shag anytime
Either Dick or Mizz Kate Kane. Oo, or Renee! I would like to play board games with Cass and Tim, however. Perhaps drunkenly. Definitely drunkenly.
7. The character I'd want to be like
Barbara gets competence and determination without the standard issue Bat-lunacy, so I'll pick her.
8. The character I'd slap
9. A pairing that I love
Dick/Tim, now and forever. The angst in current canon just makes me ship it all the more.
10. A pairing that I despise
Damian/Dick is a new one that makes me want to gag. I have viciously conflicted feelings about Tim/Bruce and I don't actually ship it, but I still enjoy pointing out the strange screwball comedy from hell dynamic that they had the first year or so of OYL. Reading about them having sex terrifies me now, however.
11. Favorite character
Timmmmmmmmy. Shine on, you crazy diamond.
12. My five favorite characters
1. Tim
2. Dick
3. Jason
4. pre-OYL Cass
5. Renee Montoya
13. My five least favorite characters
1. Damian
2. Two-Face
3. Harley Quinn, holy crap I cannot stand her
4. Let's just say any and all Bat-villains, which is a tremendously unpopular opinion.
5. Matches Malone. Which totally counts.
14. Which character I am most like
Am I feeling Dick's intense emotional neediness, Jason's righteous rage, or Tim's fine art of self-denial the most recently?
15. My deep, dark fandom secret
This is not a secret to anyone who has known me for any period of time, but I cannot conceive, ship or write Tim as having any sexual feelings for women whatsoever. His behavior in the comics has never really convinced me, as much as I thought that Zo was adorable (I believe that my feelings re: Stephanie, albeit strong, are mostly disconnected from my thesis). I'm not going to apologize for writing a one hundred percent gay Tim, especially considering a comic book company which is apparently terrified of gay male sexuality (and will allow lesbian sexuality when it gets them sales, let's be perfectly honest). I certainly don't think that it's any worse than writing him as an emotionless puppetmaster sociopath.

Again, this isn't a secret to some people, but the lay of the fannish land in DW seems to be a little different, so I felt like it needed to be stated again. And this is admittedly coming from a person who has been so cranky this week that the simple act of reading the newest Tiny Titans issue made me flail with rage about the enforcement of blatant heteronormativity with no queer possibilities whatsoever and how I can't escape it EVEN IN A TITLE FOR SCHOOLCHILDREN STARRING SCHOOLCHILDREN, so.

Finally, a very special pic.

DCAU Timmy as Mei = win forever. Now what about a Catbus Batmobile? CATWOMANBUS?

I love your list and its answers, even if there's NO BART WTF. *Especially* Tim the big queen, because he is and it's wonderful and I just wish he'd realize it.

Do me? or don't! I just wanted to say hi. And send you love. <333

A good number of them hetship Tim and I am finding it completely baffling.

Is that what that is about? Because I see this too, and I keep trying not to pull them aside and having the talk. Maybe I'll just do a post where I take a picture of Tim, a picture of NPH, and a picture of Adam Lambert side by side and a note that says: WHAT DO THESE THREE HAVE IN COMMON? THINK CAREFULLY.

hahaha. I don't respect that at all. I'm a fucking jerk.

The problem is the only girl I ever actually believed for Tim was Ariana. These latest girls they keep throwing up don't work because they are not Tim's type regardless of gender. The last thing where I went, okay, maybe was the comment about Squire. She is possible.

Everyone I know who doesn't ship him with Kon ships him with Dick. I really can't handle reading anything involve Tim and girls. It's gross. oh god, now I know what petra was saying about having her own DCU fandom. hahaha. I don't want new people.

/cracks up/ I remember that.

I did not like Zoanne - nothing against her personally, but that whole thing was Tim desperately trying not to be swallowed whole by Robin, and it just felt desperate and like he was clinging to why I am not Bruce Wayne by his fingernails, and she was way too high maintenance for him or even his ability to devote time to anyone.

Plus, she's uh, not his type. To be blunt, Tim likes slumming it with loud trash. She was not either of those things.

I was more talking about Kon and Dick actually but sorry.

[personal profile] glitterandlube 2010-02-20 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
I was not including Ariana in that. Ariana is completely different from everyone else Tim has dated. My point was more about Tim's actual type. She really wasn't it - though she was somewhat related to Darcy later. She was more a connection to Gotham of old.

Also, to be clear, I am loud trash. I enjoy it in other people. It's not the reason I don't like Steph. My dad is a coal miner, I'm from WV, my dad's second wife is his fucking cousin. My parents were so poor when I was little my mom couldn't afford bras. [I have no cavities though so haha denied!] Or well, maybe the one step above it Steph, Dick, Jason, and Kon got. No one needs to see acid washed jeans.

I do not use insults the way most people use them or even the same way each time I say a word.

On a different subject I was attempting to watch some shit on yt, and this guy is arguing he doesn't like people saying being gay in our DNA. I guess we should go back to telling people it's a lifestyle choice. I normally just tell people it's because Boobs are so fucking awesome, it's not my fault.

It's been really interesting to see the newish influx of DC fans that's happened post-RIP. A good number of them hetship Tim and I am finding it completely baffling.
Ever since I came across that anti-Zoanne Jaime/Tim story, I've been really good about protecting myself from fic. I can't even imagine what it must be like, but I'm terrified.

Also, I forgot to pout at you re: Matches. GLOWER.

And the magic of this meme is I find your opinions that I don't agree with terribly interesting, as opposed to just terrible! :D

That is such a wonderful idea. And someone asks Jaime where he gets his ideas from and he gets all misty-eyed and tells them TOVAR IS ALIVE IN MY HEART. Oh, how I would weep.

That's an interesting idea, and I think there might be something to it. All I can say is I'm gradually becoming happier with comics, because both Marvel and DC seem to be moving away from grim and gritty and getting back to what I enjoy, which is people in dumb costumes fighting killer robots from space.

ALSO, you talking about reading and preferring Tim as straight-up (lol see what I did there) gay and how DC seems to be scared of male homosexuality while using lesbian titillation as a marketing took brought to mind an idea that was circling in my head about...not the "worth", but maybe the "social value" of certain queer characters and couples in both companies. I need to think about it more, but thanks for reminding me.

I've been able to... emotionally distance myself from canon? That's definitely a good thing. When a title starts to upset me I tend to drop the book altogether and not come back for a while, which is why I'm only getting back into DC now. Well, that, and I've found a pretty good bunch of people to talk about this stuff with. :D

If I ever actually got around to typing out the post it would probably deal with trying to balance characters like Billy and Teddy, who are white and middle class but visibly in a relationship, with characters like Kate, who's Jewish and from a military background and Renee, who's Latina and from a working class background. Sort of...balancing visibility versus diversity, and why one company can do queer relationships with mostly white characters while the other can do diverse queer characters but doesn't like putting them in relationships, WHY CAN'T THEY MANAGE BOTH. IDK, like I said I'd need to think about it more.
mona: misty knight strokes colleen wing's hair and stares into her eyes to console her. (batwoman and the question)

[personal profile] mona 2010-02-20 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Same goes for most depictions of Renee. Actually, I just only trust Rucka (and sometimes Winick) when it comes to writing queer characters over at DC.

IAWTC! I also like Devin Grayson's very bi Dick, too bad it's not true text, and similarly I would appreciate the way Simone wrote Babs if her queerness were more than subtextual/something Gail sees when writing her but hasn't (been able to?) put on the page...but Rucka is the only writer I've read who really tackles like, queer identity and queer intersections in a visible, textual way, lesbians being three dimensional people who aren't solely defined by their sexuality but are still affected and shaped by it and by how society treats them for it...yeah, he does a great job and is pretty much who got me reading DC because I was so pleasantly surprised with Gotham Central Renee and all his other titles as I made my way through canon. I ALSO HAVE TO READ MORE WINICK but his Mia and his boyhooker!Jason are both very well done, this is all I know so far...

Also if you feel like it, I would love to hear your thoughts re: Steph dislike! I am new DC blood who was introduced to her via Batgirl and accordingly fell in deep and abiding true love, and backreading her canon from this POV has just made it impossible for me to grok a lot of the anti-Steph perspectives I see (esp "she unforgivably wronged Tim", I constantly wonder if I've just missed some essential canon or something). SO SINCE YOURS IS A POV I TRUST AND AM INTERESTED IN, I would love to get some insight!

And thank you for laying out the Tim-is-closeted reading as something neither biphobic nor misogynistic - sure, if fandom writes EVERY GUY that way we have a problem, but with Tim, the subtext is there and DC really does have fucking issues with queer male sexuality. I mean, comics canon is always fun in how inconsistent it is and how it can yield multiple readings, so I absolutely think, at least based on what I've read (with Tam, Zoanne, and Steph) that hetshipping Timmy has canon basis TOO, and I'm all...twitchy in general about quiet sex drives/low level chemistry, virginity, asexuality, etc etc being things fandom seizes upon as proof of auto-gayness. I guess I see those as all places it makes sense to draw on WHEN reading the character as queer, but I kind of in general hate the idea that it's possible to accurately gauge someone's internal experience of attraction/romance/sex by looking at their life and interactions with other people (vs finding ways to identify with them/project yourself or your loved ones onto them based on those things, which is really truly different imo), and so in general I'm not down with the fandom eagerness to 'prove' a character one thing or another from the outside, if that makes any sense. LIKE "I READ TIMMY AS 100% GAY (AND WRITE HIM ACCORDINGLY)" = YOU GO ON WITH YOUR BAD SELF, and "Timmy SHOULD be written as 100% gay, and the fact that you won't write him or any central dude characters as textually queer makes me rage every time I see him hetted up, ugh, why are you such heteronormative wimps, DC?" = yeah, fair enough! But "Timmy IS 100% gay and here's why" = shut the fuck up, I know the kind of heteronormative shit you'd be saying about me if I were a fandom character based on this logic and it makes me want to punch you in the face. LOL DO MY DISTINCTIONS MAKE ANY SENSE, IHNI.

I'm worried I sound so argumentative by accident or something here where really I'm like ooooh, let me pick your brain and get you to discuss these things with me more pretty please pretty please! I REALLY LOVED READING ALL YOUR ANSWERS (ESP THE BLUE BEETLE ONES, JAIME/SCARAB 4EVA AND EVA and worrrd on the awesomeness of Brenda/Paco as an interesting established relationship who don't just lose all appeal once they're together). I just kind of get excited to tl;dr with people since I am a shiny-eyed DC n00b, ahaha.

ETA: I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT ABOUT SCANDAL SAVAGE WHEN MENTIONING SIMONE. I DO INDEED LOVE SCANDAL; Rucka has still impressed me more on the whole with how he explores queer identity and stuff, but Scandal is an AWESOME queer character and deserves a fucking shout-out.

Yess, Dick and Diana are two characters where I'm like LOOK, DEVIN AND GREG WROTE THEM AS BI; ANY WRITER WHO TRIES TO SAY DIFFERENT CAN JUST GO DIE IN A FIRE. They were my first versions of the characters and they will be my canon for all time.

BTW ty for reminding me to get off my ass and read Outsiders from cover to cover, I've been slooooowly working through New Teen Titans with this idea that I am going to read ALL TITANS CANON EVER, IN ORDER, EXHAUSTIVELY, till I get to Outsiders and TTV3, but goshdarnit, I need Grace and Anissa and Owen Mercer and Dick + Roy angsting adorably at each other and etc etc, in my life, already.

Ahhh, apologies for the Steph poking - people seem to have pretty intense Steph opinions one way or another so I can understand why it might feel like a minefield to even discuss her. Thanks for expanding despite the discomfort, though, since I really have been kind of chomping at the bit for more info on where all these intense Steph opinions even originate, ahaha. But seriously, that all makes sense; I'm so frustrated with the way Gail Simone writes Diana that I have actually lost much of my interest in the character, and I'm scared for something similar happening with Kory and Donna when I move out of 80s canon...writers fucking up or channeling worldviews you really strongly disagree with through characters you might otherwise like is freaking guaranteed to make them tough to stomach. (AND SIMPLY NOT LIKING HER OR HER EXECUTION IS TOTALLY VALID TOO, I'm so used to comics opinions being these extensive, deeply constructed arguments, ahaha but seriously, preference and taste = just as legit as anything else. Half the things I don't ship are purely because I don't like the dynamic, not because I can actually name a reason to take issue with their relationship. Nor should I have to! Nor should you! Etc!)

Anyway, I don't begrudge you your Steph dislike either, fwiw, I'm just this ravenous creature who wants all the conversations on characters and canon I missed before I joined the fandom to happen where I can see them. So I poke poke poke at people's brains out of voracious curiosity, not upsetness that they don't love my favorites or a belief that they need to change that. Trufax!

Also, c) I don't mind because I love it when Tim suffers because I am a sick fuck. So I'm unsurprised by Tim's feelings of betrayal and grief, but I'm not hating Steph for that bc it was a plot contrivance.

LOL I agree so much with the second bit (basically I've said this elsewhere but I think that it's easy to sympathize with Tim as he grims it up at Steph without demonizing Steph, and to think Steph didn't really do anything wrong without thinking Tim's a big jerk for being betrayed and angry. THEY ARE BOTH FINE AND JUSTIFIED. IN MY OPINION!!), and I love your love of Tim suffering - I am the same way. The more I love certain characters, the more I yearn to see their tears...and pretty much the entire Batfamily qualifies for this, lolol. (OK WELL I WANT JASON TO GET HAPPINESS JUST BECAUSE I'M SO FUCKING SICK OF HIM GETTING TO DEVELOP RELATIONSHIPS OR GET POSITIVE VALIDATION OR ACKNOWLEDGMENT WITH EXACTLY NOBODY, and I feel similarly about &Cass;, but at the same time Jason angst is one of my favorite things ever and if they let Cass angst happen ON-PANEL and ICLY I'd pretty much be devouring that too so..../sick fuck.)

I'm personally of the opinion that for Geoff Johns, the Kon/Cassie/Tim triangle goes in all directions, if you know what I mean

lolololol, yes.

And quite honestly, I don't think your stance on Tim is frustrating in the least! It's more like, I have sometimes taken issue with the "Tim is gay" stance in fandom overall, not because of its basic existence but because, like I said, sometimes the way it's framed can hit my UGH SEXUALITY DOES NOT WORK LIKE THAT SHUT UP buttons. And I guess I felt like...sharing this with you for some reason, ahaha. But I really did love reading your POV on gay!Tim and it is the version of the stance that I find perfectly legit and the crankiness associated with it, perfectly awesome.

(I won't stray too far into why I do want Tim/Tam to happen seriously and meaningfully in canon, beyond ZOMG SO CUTE ZOMG TAM SO ADORABLE, but suffice to say I am fucking sick and tired of Tim - with Tam and Zoanne - and Bruce - with Jezebel Jet - and Kon - with Tana - dating black girls but having white girls be the only ones who are good enough to consistently get featured as their true love forevers - Steph, Selina, Cassie. From this perspective I'm PERSONALLY sort of militantly a Tim/Tam-becoming-more-and-more-of-a-main-char shipper, or very vehemently part of the NO GIRLS FOR TIM PLEASE camp because it frustrates me so much. I mean you can even expand this to Kory vs. Babs, where Kory is modeled off of a South American dancer and coded non-white and Babs is the one that Dick gets retconned as always being in true love with, not just hormone-lust, or Bruce with increasingly-hateful Talia or come the fuck on, DC, stop with the one true white girl loves PLEASE. OH GOD I went and flung that tangent at you anyway, OK I KNOW THAT YOU DON'T READ/CARE MUCH ABOUT RED ROBIN SO FEEL FREE TO IGNORE THIS SECTION it was basically meant to be like, my own personal preferences on Tim + bishipping. In all honesty I just want Dick/Tim/Jason more than anything in the whole world forever, and Tam/Steph/Cass/Zoanne interaction of some sort...yeah.)

A few items of note:

- Tim. J introduced him to me by recapping A Lonely Place of Dying and I was sold.

I fail to see how this is your fault when it's simply the goddamn truth. I really need them to stop making him make comments about women in the comics because it throws me out of the story.every.fucking.time. And no, Tomasi, Tim would not be looking at Power Girl's boobs. I would agree, but it's Tim. I can't see him even saying that as herr herr womens comment. I like my Timothy respectful of women.

1. The character I first fell in love with

Kyle Rayner. Fuck you Judd Winick! WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO ME?

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now

Barry Allen! I was totally against more Silver Age bullshit because of Hal but Barry is awesome! And it's actually pretty funny that Morrison is obsessed with Barry's ass and uses him as a magical guide.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don't

Hal Jordan. Fuck you Hal Jordan. Fuck you fuck you fuck you you slutty douchebag racist murderer. Also, you're a pedo, you bastard. And I blame you for Guy's brain damage. I hate you. Stop touching your friends girlfriends/wives and stop hitting on underage girls, you fucking jackass. ahem.

5. The character I used to love but don't any longer

Superman. I actually always thought Superman was awesome but now I can't fucking stand him, and spend all my time judging him and comparing him to Kon-el.

My love for Dick is fading too. I'm sad about that but there is so many times he needed to step up and didn't that I'm kind of getting done with him.

6. The character I would shag anytime

Huntresses. I don't give a fuck who else she's slept with. I would have so much dirty sex with her it would probably cause my death.

7. The character I'd want to be like

Kate Spencer. I want to kill people and mean it for justice. I'm not kidding in any way, shape, or form.

8. The character I'd slap
Barbara Gordan. Then I would tell her to marry Dinah and leave Dick alone so he can have sex with Kory like a decent person.

9. A pairing that I love
Lex Luthor/Mirror Bruce/Selina Dick/Kory TED/BOOSTER Jason/Kris dagger/guns - threesome of win

10. A pairing that I despise
Clark and Lois. Roy and Cheshire. I love Lian, but that makes me think so much less of Roy. Barbara and Dick - they turn each other in shrews.

11. Favorite character

12. My seven favorite characters
1. Kon-el
2. Tim
3. Bart
4. Kate Spencer
5. Jason Todd
6. Lex Luthor
7. Len Snart

13. My five least favorite characters

1) Clark Kent
2) Jonathan Kent [hahahaha]
3) Damien Wayne
4) Talia Al Ghul
5) The Joker

corollary: tbh, I hate most of Batman's villains. Black Mask was funny, but he was so vicious it wasn't feasible, you can't run an empire of any kind like that. Seriously, your minions will kill you if you're too kill happy. Two-Face sucks and an idiot. Bane. Bah. Calender Man? Fucking no. The Joker needs to die. Immediately. Hush was a little interesting, but his motivation was fucking stupid. The Penguin? LAME.

14. Which character I am most like

I am not like any of these people.

15. My deep, dark fandom secret

I ship Jason Todd with Kyle Rayner. I was completely baffled by Countdown and them hating each other. I actually thought they would get along because Jason Todd isn't really that different from Guy, and Kyle doesn't alpha male at anyone. That made no sense. Both of them are stubborn as hell - if they had sex it would be the hottest thing ever. Or they could have a threesome with Dick. That Tim would film. bbl I need to picture this for a few hours.
