riseupwithfists: (bart goes to film school)
Posted some Porn Battle prompts for the hell of it and because it might help me kickstart my writing. Everyone write me tons of Jaime/Tim, okay?
riseupwithfists: art from red hood lost days (jay: always fade)
I wish that I could marry journalling's more in-depth conversations with Tumblr's speed and the recent migration of the sillier stuff. I'm lazy, what can I say; I'd much rather be a one-stop shopper, and updating even one thing on a semi-regular basis is apparently beyond me, let alone two or three. I enjoy Tumblr, don't get me wrong, and I don't want to sound like a crochety old harridan. One *can* have long conversations on Tumblr; perhaps I just find it harder to follow and aesthetically unpleasing.

This post is mainly for this gif, though:

riseupwithfists: still from somos lo que hay (what keeps mankind alive)
So I tried to make up some sort of Best of 2010 list and discovered that I was merely bitching about things. So here's more of a garbled collection of thoughts:

J. and I really enjoyed The Maid a few days ago, but I stand by my assertion that 2010 was a total shit year for film, if only by my own standards. Everything involving The Social Network makes me cringe, Inception grows more and more baldly ridiculous the more that the hype fades (unpopular opinion, and I usually love Nolan, but I couldn't get past the hackneyed script), and don't get me started about Black Swan. Somos Lo Que Hay: still the best film of the year, IMO, and if it doesn't become the sleeper sophisticated horror hit of 2011 I'll wail and gnash my teeth.

Music fared a bit better - there were multiple new albums that I adored from start to finish. Here's a small mixtape of 2010 music that I really enjoyed: 2010-ish music from Kate.

Red Hood: Lost Days and Young Avengers: Awesome Crusade made comics worthwhile in 2010 (with a brief shout-out to Morning Glories, which isn't the most unique take on the teenage conspiracy genre but is certainly doing it with enough verve to keep me coming back for more). I'm pretty much done with the Batfamily for the time being, due to irreconcilable differences.

So, the story I wrote for Yuletide: freedom we shall also shout, starring the Uruguayan national football team. I had originally wanted to write the Adventures of Solitude-length ensemble epic, but Real Life got into the way. Am I in danger in writing a huge post about the NT soon? I perhaps may be.
riseupwithfists: art by rick veitch (Default)
a) My Yuletide fic totally made my morning, guys and gals! I got this perfect fic about the Uruguayan national team that was everything I needed out of a Uruguay NT story: Cuento. Even if you don't know the source, I'd highly recommend reading it. It's that awesome. I will probably tl;dr about this more in the very near future, but the mulled wine is waiting and my lady wants to spend Christmas with me, so there's that. Thank you, anonymous author! You are great.

b) I've seen this offer around in slightly different forms, but I wanted to lay down this challenge to you, my lovelies. If anyone guesses which story I wrote in the Yuletide archive before the reveals, you get 1,000 words of either fiction or non-fiction. Anything you want. All guesses will be screened, because... because. This will either be impossible or incredibly easy, I can't decide. Also, SHOW YOUR WORK and tell me why you think I wrote it.

YULETIDE PANIC

SO DELICIOUS

I can do it, it's just... an interesting state of mind I'm in right now.

Commiserate with me inside, if you need to!

Gotten from [personal profile] gloss: If you were asked to pick one scene, one line, one detail, one moment of some kind out of all the stories I've written and say "This, this, for whatever reason, I remember, this is something that struck home with me, that I wanted to keep," what would it be?

I'm currently battling the outline for my Yuletide story and am apparently in need of some positive reinforcement.

(As an aside, it is SO HARD not to talk about my Yuletide story here, y'all. It's either going to be phenomenally evident that I wrote it or nobody will be able to guess because it's so crappy, but either way count on some massive TL;DR about the process once authors are revealed.)

I just realized that it was that time again:

JASON CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN.

I: should have a Jasonathon day soon in order to celebrate, y/y?
riseupwithfists: scarab's text bubbles re: how much he loves jaime reyes (scarab harts jaime)
Let's do this, chickadees:

I think it would be fun to talk about stories, but the usual memes are like, "What happens next?" "Tell me about Character A?" Which isn't so much talking about stories as it is writing more of a story. But you know how sometimes you read something and you're like, "I got ___ out of this story, I wonder if I have that right?" or "What on earth was ____ supposed to be?" and it's too awkward to ask the author? Now you could totally ask!

I've heard people say that writing is hard because you have to make decisions, but we never really talk about the decisions we make with stories or why we make them. We talk about plot bunnies, but not about how we actually turn them into a story.

And it seems like a lot more fun to do that than to do working.

So, if you wanted, ask me questions! (Or use this to ask your flist to ask you questions).

What were you trying to do [here]? Why did you decide to ____? This is what I thought about xyz, is that what you were going for? What made you write ____? Why did you decide to do this? And so on.
riseupwithfists: (milagro squee)
Dear Yuletide Writer,

First off, you are pretty awesome for volunteering to write in these (admittedly really tiny and weird) fandoms. I wish you all the best, and no matter what I end up with, I'm gonna love it, I assure you.

details and fandoms below the cut! )

Um, ask me my top five whatevers and I will answer? Or just ask me un-numbered stuff. I think I'm ready to talk again.

So I signed up for [community profile] mundane_bingo in the hopes of getting my fiction writing muscles back into shape, and my card has arrived!

mah card, let me show you it )

I have an insanely good one for "eating a meal". Or maybe it's just insane. Anyone wanna help me brainstorm?

Fandom is making me unhappy. As a result, it's been leading me to act sort of awful. I'd like to apologize to anyone who has noticed me acting a little (or a lot) off lately, as well as anyone who I've said anything horrid to. I'm still thinking things over so I'll probably be a bit quiet, though I'm thinking about participating in [community profile] mundane_bingo because of the low minimum word count involved and my desire to get back into the swing of fiction writing.

In the meantime, I'm going to be a little needy and link to my thread here. I'd also like to know how everyone is doing in the comments here. Tell me one thing that's made you happy recently, and I'll try to reciprocate.

A few months back, I mentioned to some of you that I was trying to write a current canon Tim story. Or, rather, me attempting to make current canon Tim a Tim I would like to write about, because GOOD NIGHT I have some issues with the past year or so of DC Bat-stuff. Sadly, I don't think it's gonna happen, even though I really wanted it to, but that's no reason not to share some of it with the world. The following includes the Kate-cap of the last few issues of Red Robin, my reaction(s) to it, and my attempted solution in the shape of fic, with commentary on the stuff I was planning on writing.

Don't expect anything amazing here. This is more about getting the idea out out so I don't feel guilt about it anymore.

Just a heads-up: I'll be picspamming from Architecture and Mortality on my Tumblr (I know, I know). If you want to know what the hell the punny cosplaying giants thing in Adventures in Solitude was about, this should shed some light on it, seeing as I haven't finished my story annotations yet.

I haven't read much of Azzarello's other stuff, but I recommend Architecture and Mortality highly for anyone who's frustrated with the way that DC does things.

I'm calling it already: Toy Story 3 is the film to beat for best of the year. It's also the saddest film I've seen in quite some time. It's everything that the genre should be, and it's funny that this franchise is still the gold standard for the last fifteen or so years of animation; nobody does it better.

I hope that everyone is having a grand Monday morning. I'm currently drinking some coffee, preparing to watch the last episode of Treme (I'M SO EXCITED! I'M SO SCARED!) and trying to get back into the swing of writing:

-there's the Jaime story that's a deleted scene from Adventures in Solitude that J's been waiting for me to finish for ages (and I can actually finish it now that I've found my long-misplaced notebook!).

-I've got a ramble in me about the New Pornographers concert I went to last week, tying into my long post of notes, commentary, and annotations on Adventures in Solitude.

-I've got a Jason story that needs to be told (any other details would be spoilery).

-Annnnnd Tumblr spam of Wondercassie back when she was a wee tomboy baby dyke has inspired me to write Cassie and Titans ladies fic.

What should I try my hand at first?

If you don't want to be spoiled by a special effects test run for a theoretical blue beetle series, don't click on this link.

STOP. BEETLETIME.

It's already been a long month and I'm really in the sort of mood where I will bite someone's head off if poked, so anything more negative than "I HOPE THIS IS GOOD BC IT WOULD BE AWFUL IF IT SUCKED" is somewhat discouraged. Let's try to be positivefacers for now, yeah?
riseupwithfists: art by rick veitch (I LOVE YOU KICKPUNCHER)
I love being reminded of the fact that large swaths of fandom actually can't understand the difference between depiction and approval to save their life (the above link spoils the entirety of the movie Splice, btw, but I can quote if people want to know the gist without having it spoiled).

I saw Splice today and the person above... we didn't see the same movie, clearly. And maybe I'm privileged because I see a lot of film and read a lot about film, but an interpretation of the film that assumes that it's condoning and promoting what's going down is at best facile and at worst made in extremely bad faith.

And this is a separate issue from people getting triggered by material in the movie! Apparently the American marketing campaign really misrepresented the film, and I understand that. This movie is not for everyone. It is filled with fucked up stuff. But it isn't saying what the reviewer in the link above said it was saying. ARTISTIC COMPREHENSION, Y'ALL. YOU CAN HAS IT.
riseupwithfists: art by rick veitch (gothamcore)
So, I've been thinking this morning about how to respond to this lovely litle piece of PR spin courtesy of Racefail Comics besides starting to drink before noon and maybe making my head explode in volcanic rage.

My inner cynic ('you can't change things!') is currently warring with my inner idealist over all of this. I'm not buying anything from DC again until there is a serious regime change. This isn't that hard, to be honest - I'm broke as hell, and I haven't been inside a comic store in months.

But that isn't enough, is it?

My second thought (after "where's my liquor at") was that things like this should just make us more resolved to join these companies and influence them from within. Because there's a whole world of indie comics out there, and comics creators who are anything but the young white male norm that's been pushed upon us for decades, and we rival them in sheer numbers. We could create a new world, we could run the asylum and recreate it in our own image if we start now. But we're in a recession, and many of us don't even want to go into comics professionally, and perhaps it wouldn't be worth the trouble. I'd personally jump at the chance, if only to be fired two weeks in for not being able to shut up about how fucking horrible they are.

So here's a more general solution:

Make good art. Make smart art. Make art that reflects the world as it is. Make art that reflects the way you think the world should be. Make thoughtful art, because thoughtful art is good art. Make art that makes people smile, that makes people think, that makes people cry. Make art that doesn't treat anyone who isn't a straight white male as pawns in the hands of clueless white men. Make art that stars us, that celebrates us. Make art so that children can find a hero or heroine to root for who looks like them, who loves like them. Make art that questions everything that the world stands upon, that subverts what the Ian Sattlers of the world seem so smug about in their privilege and their chosen ignorance. SHARE your art with others, as far and wide as you possibly can. Make art that can rival anything that the big boys put out. Make art that can replace it.

Making art is the best revenge.

We can make something more satisfying, together.

A more cynical Plan B would be to raise such an organized stink that they can't ignore us for fear of a media frenzy, but I have no idea how to go about it. The next time DC pulls this (for there will be a next time), we could raise such a hue and cry and a fucking stink until they can't brush us off with Racist Apology 101 anymore (and personally, if they ever touch a hair on Jaime Reyes' head I will be at the front of the riot, believe you me).

But there's no reason why we can't do both. Does anyone have any ideas as to how we could push back against the Ian Sattlers who are running the asylum? Because simply not buying what they're selling clearly isn't working.

(Another post that I won't be writing is how I'm at war with myself over whether or not my inability to disconnect my heart from DC's characters indicates a personal failing.)
riseupwithfists: art by rick veitch (shirley's got her eye on you)
Ugh, I've stopped and restarted this several times, and inside me there's a much longer version of this post in which I explore in depth the problems with navigating in the world that we live in and what that says about how we navigate fannish space, and also the problems I've been having lately with the concept of fannish policing, but I will say this:

Can we stop conflating not writing/shipping het pairings (or not writing/shipping an equal ratio of male/male and female/female pairings) with misogyny? Please? It's a lot more complicated than that, and I've been seeing a lot of very dense, difficult issues compressed into a dismissive simplicity that isn't necessarily accurate.

Not to mention the fact that I personally don't write or ship het (with a few queered exceptions) because I am queer and am in fandom partly in order to escape all that het stuff.

(Also, if you don't think this is about you, then it probably isn't. I just felt like I had to be cranky in my own space rather than wank it up in the spaces of others.)

ETA: To be clear, I thoroughly enjoy reading and sometimes writing what I call "queered-up het", and my scorn is most certainly not including this realm of fandom.

ETAx2: Jube, as usual, hits the nail right on the fucking head.

AGGH I JUST TOLD MYSELF I WOULDN'T DO THIS.

I made a deal where I won't picspam until I'm done with all my chores for today, though, so there's that.

First off, awesome story is awesome: Like Ice is Cold, by [personal profile] gloss the Magnificent. I've said this over at the post itself, but this is the best Cassie story I have ever read. The insight into what makes her Wonderful self tick is fantastic.

Also, I've started to fill up the ficlet prompts:

-Power Girl and Atlee do their thang.

The Jaime and Scarab Show, take two hundred.

More are welcome, of course. I'm working on Jaime/Tim/Scarab but it's turning in a slightly depressio thing so it's not up yet.
riseupwithfists: art by rick veitch (kara: am not sure if want!)
Ugh it is so bloody hot that even I, the hothouse orchid, am beginning to grow irked. Feeling drowsy in the middle of the day and thank you, upped meds, for the return of that special feeling is even worse when it's ninety degrees and no number of fans and open windows are making it better. I foresee a two am Slush Puppy* run in my future.

Am still taking ficletty requests, btw! I can't get to filling them until tomorrow because of work, but I've already got ideas that I am excited about. But I want more. FEED ME SEYMOUR.

*and okay, is there any non-caffeinated sweet slushy treat better than a Slush Puppy? It's all about the tiny icy pellets. Ice caps win if you include sweet, sweet caffeine, however.

In the very near future, I'm going to post my huge post of annotations, meta, and all-around TL;DR about Adventures in Solitude, as well as a very beloved side-story that was cut out at the last minute and was a case of me killing my darlings. However, I'm still in the phase where I'm sort of detoxing from finishing it and reallllllly need a break from that, so.

DRABBLE MEME. I'm long-winded, so when I say Drabble I really mean Ficlet, which could be anything from 100 to 400 words.

Fandoms: DCU, some Marvel, and now I feel like I could be comfortable enough to write Community so you could try that. Cracked-out crossovers are also welcome. And, even though I just said above that I'm in a bit of AiS detox, I could still totally write stuff set in that verse if y'all wanted, aka ahahahaha I am totally inconsistent.

Note: while I'm aware of certain parts of DCU current canon, I haven't read or cared for all of it. So feel free to request something new canon-based, but I might not be able to fill it. Also, I tend not to write het, for those of you just tuning in, though I could try if I love you enough. Anything queer or gennish is fine and dandy, though.
riseupwithfists: art by rick veitch (these things get louder)
Because I swear I can talk about something other than comics once in a blue moon:

tv that i has been watching: community, treme, doctor who. not specifically spoilery but i'm cutting just in case because of general... spoileryness. )

And now, a meme, since I don't know if I've done a DW icon meme yet: Reply to this post, and I will tell you my favorite icon of yours. Then post this to your own journal using your own favorite icon. I'm an indecisive soul, so it'll probably be more like three, so.

ETA: Also, I'm sort of going on a subscribing spree, so if you've left an interesting comment either here or in a friend's journal and I like the cut of your jib, I'm being a creeper and adding you. I am KATE. I write fic and slightly self-righteous meta, usually about comics. I also enjoy salmon.
